Until recently, home coffee roasting was practiced only by die-hard coffee drinkers.  Now, however, more and more people are equipping their kitchens with a coffee roaster.  Why is that?  And how do you choose a home coffee roaster that is appropriate for your needs, interests, and general lifestyle?

Home coffee roasting is part and parcel of a growing interest in controlling the foodstuffs that each of us consumes on a daily basis.  You are what you eat and most of us would prefer to choose for ourselves what we eat.  Witness the burgeoning interest in organic foods and the locavore movement.  But whether you drink Fair Trade coffee, organic coffee, or some other specialty coffee; everyone desires quality and home roasted coffee is unsurpassed in quality.

Green coffee beans are readily available and have a shelf life of months.  Roasted coffee beans, however, retain their peak flavor for less than a week.  After that time, quality rapidly degenerates and after two weeks is less than one-half what it once was.  Imagine what that means for the quality of store-bought coffee!  Is it any wonder that coffee that is freshly roasted at a local coffee shop tastes so much better?  And when you consider that the price of green coffee beans is less than one-half the price of store-bought beans, no wonder home coffee roasters are growing in popularity!

But there is a problem.  Convenience.  Traditional coffee roasting was smelly, smoky, and just a little bit dangerous.  Fortunately, believe it or not, modern technology has the answer: a smoke-free coffee roaster.  (Also known as a smokeless coffee roaster.)  Or, a home coffee roaster that can be vented.  Sometimes just placing the roaster near the hood of a kitchen range is sufficient.

Let's face it – we live in our kitchens and what better way to enjoy time with friends and family then to relax with a superb cup of java.  You can even send them home with a small gift: a little package of your own specialty "home roast."

The following pages are meant as a guide to choosing your own home coffee roaster.  Each of the recommended roasters was chosen with you, the home coffee drinker in mind.  Buy a coffee roaster starter kit!  Enjoy!
